UNIVERSITY
University Students Program
Educate Girls Now (EGN) gives hope to Afghan girls who, since the Taliban took control of the country, have been barred from all secondary schools and universities. Through this program, girls who dreamt of becoming empowered leaders and role models will have their dreams restored.
EGN is addressing Afghan girls’ need for a high school and university education by offering online classes, home tutors, and resources which allow girls to complete high school and prepare for university admission. We prepare young women to adapt to a university environment, with the academic background to achieve, and ability to handle the stress of leaving home and family. Throughout their time at university, we provide in-person support, counseling, coordination with professors, stipends and academic tutoring when appropriate.
Your support for this program will enable young women to pursue their education and dreams with renewed hope and belief in their future. In the long run, the education they receive and the experience of living and studying with students from different countries and backgrounds will increase their understanding of others, be better able to communicate across differences, and, prepare them for careers that will make a difference in their communities. Many will go on to earn fellowships at US and European universities and to pursue high level degrees in STEM careers.
As role models, every girl you sponsor will contribute to her community by empowering more girls to believe in themselves and strive to reach their potential.
Please read this moving letter from a young woman in this program: My name is Elahe, my favorite field is mechanical engineering. I have been studying this field since I was 12 years old. I went to a robotics competition in Iran on my own and after that I became a member of the national robotics girls team in Afghanistan. I have been on that team now for three years.
In my country, the advancement and rights of women are not given much importance, especially in the field in which I am interested. In Afghanistan people do not care about women mechanics. In this society, we have many girls who leave school and are now illiterate, but we also have brave, dignified and determined women who can be excellent role models for others by showing them how to take a positive step in their lives. I do not want to ignore their talents and efforts. My goal is to be able to inspire and influence other women in my country to move forward according to their dreams, so that they do not underestimate themselves and believe in their own potential.
I am in Afghanistan where girls are not allowed to study. In fact, since we, on the robotics team are educated and strong young women, we are being hunted. I fear I will be forced to marry a Taliban soldier and lose all my hope. With your help, one day my efforts will allow me to reach my dreams.
